About Forest Certification in Canada

The map displays both forest tenure areas and the certification standards applied to them. Three independent forest certification programs are used in Canada:

  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
  • Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC Canada)
  • Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

More information on each program is available here.

What Is Forest Tenure?

Forest tenure refers to legally recognized agreements that define rights and responsibilities related to the use and management of forest land and resources. In Canada, provincial governments grant forest tenure licences to forest product companies. These licences are either:

  • Area-based, covering a defined land area; or
  • Volume-based, based on a specified volume of wood.

The type of tenure granted varies by province.

Tenure and Certification

In most cases, certification applies to the full area covered by an area-based tenure. In some cases, multiple companies hold volume-based tenures within the same forest area. When this occurs, certification may apply only to a portion of the area. These proportions are shown in the tables above the maps.
