Forest tenure refers to legally recognized agreements that define rights and responsibilities related to the use and management of forest land and resources. In Canada, provincial governments grant forest tenure licences to forest product companies. These licences are either:
The type of tenure granted varies by province.
In most cases, certification applies to the full area covered by an area-based tenure. In some cases, multiple companies hold volume-based tenures within the same forest area. When this occurs, certification may apply only to a portion of the area. These proportions are shown in the tables above the maps.
